The investigation into the death of actress Hayden Panettiere has expanded across state lines, with authorities in South Carolina and Los Angeles examining the circumstances surrounding her death and the possible source of drugs involved.
Panettiere, known for her roles in Heroes and Nashville, died on August 16 at the age of 36 after being found unresponsive at a residence in Greenville, South Carolina. An autopsy found no signs of trauma, and authorities have said there were no immediate indications of foul play. Her official cause and manner of death remain pending as investigators await additional testing, including toxicology results.
The case has now become a broader investigation involving the Drug Enforcement Administration, with ABC News reporting that investigators are looking at activity in both South Carolina and Los Angeles. Sources told the network the investigation is focusing on how Panettiere may have obtained drugs before her death and whether anyone who supplied them could potentially face criminal charges.
That does not mean authorities have determined that drugs caused her death. As of September 14, officials have not publicly announced a final cause of death.
DEA Joins Investigation
The Greenville City Police Department remains the lead agency, while the DEA is assisting the investigation. Authorities have reportedly been examining potential drug-supply connections as part of the case.
Panettiere's on-and-off boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, has reportedly met with DEA investigators. However, available reports say he has not been identified as a suspect in her death.
Police records previously indicated that Hickerson and his brother Zach were at the residence around the time Panettiere was found unresponsive. Officers also reported seeing medication that Panettiere had been taking.
Investigators have not publicly accused either man of causing Panettiere's death.
No Trauma Found During Autopsy
The Greenville County Coroner's Office previously said an autopsy found no signs of trauma that contributed to Panettiere's death.
Emergency dispatch audio obtained by news organizations referenced a possible overdose and cardiac arrest, but an overdose has not been officially confirmed as her cause of death.
The distinction is important as speculation surrounding the case continues online.
Until toxicology testing and the broader investigation are completed, the circumstances of Panettiere's death remain officially undetermined.
Investigation Could Focus on Drug Suppliers
ABC News reports that investigators may examine the case in a similar way to other high-profile celebrity drug investigations, where authorities focused not only on the death itself but also on individuals suspected of supplying dangerous drugs.
Whether anyone will eventually face charges in connection with Panettiere's death remains unknown.
Authorities have not publicly announced any arrests directly connected to supplying drugs to the actress.
Separate Incident Involving Boyfriend
There has also been a separate development involving Hickerson.
People reported that he was handcuffed following an alleged September 12 altercation at a restaurant in Greenville. He was later released and was not arrested, according to the report. His brother Zach was arrested for disorderly conduct following the incident.
That incident is separate from the investigation into Panettiere's death.
A Career That Began in Childhood
Panettiere began acting as a child and later became internationally recognized for playing Claire Bennet in Heroes.
She later starred as Juliette Barnes in the television drama Nashville, a role that showcased both her acting and musical abilities.
Her career stretched for more than three decades and also included appearances in the Scream film franchise and several other movies and television productions.
Following her death, Panettiere's mother said she hoped her daughter would be remembered for the talented, intelligent and outgoing person she was.
Questions Still Unanswered
Nearly a month after her death, several major questions remain unanswered.
What caused Panettiere's death? What substances, if any, were in her system? Where did those substances come from? And could another person eventually face criminal charges?
For now, investigators continue working across multiple jurisdictions while the public waits for official toxicology findings and a final determination from authorities.
CanJam News will continue following the investigation and will update this story when verified information becomes available.
