Music legend Lionel Richie has been hospitalized in St. Louis following a weekend performance, with multiple reports indicating the 77-year-old singer was admitted as a precaution while doctors investigate possible dehydration.
Richie performed Saturday night, August 29, in St. Louis. Near the end of the concert, witnesses said he appeared to be having difficulty and requested a chair while performing his closing hit, "All Night Long." He later checked himself into a local hospital for testing.
Reports say Richie was admitted to an intensive-care unit as doctors monitored his condition. Sources familiar with the situation have indicated that slight dehydration may be involved, and that the hospitalization was being treated as a precautionary measure. A source close to his tour told ABC News that Richie entered hospital "out of an abundance of caution."
During the St. Louis performance, Richie reportedly spoke openly about dealing with dehydration and was seen drinking electrolyte beverages while onstage. Reports indicate he had previously consulted a doctor after experiencing unexplained health difficulties during the tour.
Previous Health Scare Earlier This Summer
This is not the first health concern involving Richie during his Sing a Song All Night Long Tour with Earth, Wind & Fire.
On June 24 in St. Paul, Minnesota, Richie became dizzy and felt unwell during a performance, resulting in the show ending early. Paramedics met him backstage and he was taken to hospital. He later returned to performing, although several shows were postponed to allow additional recovery time.
The Chicago and Columbus concerts were among those postponed and have since been rescheduled for later dates.
What Happens Next?
As of the latest reports, there has been no indication that Richie is facing a life-threatening condition. Sources have said he is expected to be OK, although doctors are continuing to evaluate him. TMZ reported that Richie was hoping to be released from hospital Tuesday.
Richie's next scheduled performance is currently listed for September 26 in San Francisco, although it remains unclear whether his latest hospitalization will affect upcoming appearances.
The singer remains one of the most recognizable performers in popular music, with a career spanning decades as a member of the Commodores and later as a hugely successful solo artist.
