New Brunswick Moves Ahead With 500-Megawatt Gas Plant Subject to Environmental Conditions

The New Brunswick government has cleared another major hurdle for a proposed 500-megawatt natural gas generating facility, allowing the project to move forward subject to environmental conditions.

The proposed facility is intended to help meet rising electricity demand in the province and would involve multiple natural gas turbines.

The project had previously received approval from the New Brunswick Energy and Utilities Board, with NB Power saying additional generation capacity will be needed as electricity demand continues to grow.

The province’s environmental approval comes with a series of conditions intended to address environmental protection, construction impacts and ongoing monitoring.

The proposed plant has also drawn opposition from some residents and environmental advocates who have raised concerns about greenhouse-gas emissions, natural gas dependency and the long-term direction of New Brunswick’s energy system.

Supporters argue additional generation capacity will be needed as the province faces growing industrial, residential and electrification-related demand.

The project is expected to remain under scrutiny as it advances through subsequent development and regulatory stages.
