FIFA Opens Disciplinary Proceedings Against Argentina Following World Cup Controversies

FIFA has officially opened disciplinary proceedings against the Argentinian Football Association and several members of Argentina's national team following multiple controversial incidents during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The investigation includes allegations of assault and unsporting behaviour following Argentina's 1–0 extra-time defeat to Spain in the World Cup final on July 19. FIFA is also examining Argentina's conduct during other matches, including the display of a politically charged banner after the semifinal victory over England.

Players and Officials Facing Proceedings

According to FIFA, Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes faces three potential counts of assault connected to the confrontation after the final.

Defender Nahuel Molina faces two potential assault counts — one completed and one attempted — as well as one allegation of unsporting behaviour.

Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala faces one potential assault charge, while Thiago Almada is being investigated for unsporting behaviour. Spanish midfielder Gavi is also facing an unsporting-behaviour proceeding arising from the same confrontation.

The incidents occurred as Spanish players and substitutes entered the field to celebrate their victory. A confrontation followed, with several players and officials becoming involved.

Argentina's Football Association Also Under Investigation

The case goes beyond the confrontation following the final. FIFA is investigating the Argentinian Football Association for potential breaches involving:

• Team misconduct
• Discrimination and racist abuse
• Order and security at matches
• Discriminatory chants and gestures
• Delayed kickoffs

FIFA said the reported conduct occurred across several Argentina matches during the tournament.

Controversial Falkland Islands Banner

One of the most heavily discussed incidents happened after Argentina defeated England 2–1 in the semifinal on July 15.

Some Argentina players displayed a banner reading "Las Malvinas Son Argentinas," meaning "The Malvinas are Argentine." The message referred to the Falkland Islands, which Argentina calls the Malvinas and claims as its territory.

FIFA's rules restrict teams from using official sporting events to promote political or other non-sporting demonstrations. Argentina was previously fined following a similar banner incident in 2014.

It is important to make clear that FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings, but no final punishment has been announced.

Football is an emotional sport, especially during a World Cup final. However, players and officials representing their countries must understand that millions of people — including children — are watching their conduct.

Political messages, discriminatory behaviour, violence and security violations should not be ignored simply because they involve a powerful or successful football nation.

At the same time, FIFA must conduct a fair investigation, allow everyone involved to respond and apply its rules consistently. Discipline should not depend on the popularity of a player, the size of a country's fan base or the importance of the team.
